I would give it a 2.5 stars if i could, but as it's a choice between 2 and 3, it will have to be 2.

i was so excited when i saw this in the bookstore. i loved The Lovely Bones, and was really looking fwd to reading this. I am about half way through, and am desperate to throw it out of the window, but I will persevere. So far it's weird beyond reason.

i made it through the book. it's very hard to relate to Helen, the main protagonist, and understand why she did what she did. but when i finally put the book down, i realized that i didn't hate it as much as i had initially. i think a lot of my disappointment had to do with my expectation that this would be similar to the lovely bones, which managed to be uplifting despite it's macabre premise. i did eventually sympathize with Helen, but you have to read the entire book to understand why she is the way she is. You end up asking yourself a number of questions. Is Helen good or bad? Did she commit the crime out of hatred or love? How much control did she have over the kind of person she grew up into?

Sara I had the same thought--- I kept going back and forth between two and three stars. Like you, I wanted to stop half way but kept going. I guess I got caught up in it against my will, in a way. I'm glad Helen didn't kill herself.
