This is a riveting read! It was recommended to me by one of my book discussion members and I would highly recommend this for any book discussion group.

The book begins in 1891 and goes through 1970. The book is set mostly in Kalaupapa -- the Leper colony on the island of Molokai in Hawaii. The story traces the life of Rachel from when she was five, her "diagnosis" at seven and the period when she was taken from her family and eventually relocated to Molokai. From this point, we follow Rachel's relationships and her hopes, dreams and disappointments as she yearns to be healed and "free".

The book does have a somewhat happy ending, but the story makes you wonder why God gives children diseases . . .
