** spoiler alert ** Fantastic book. I was totally surprised. Didn't know much about Patti Smith's life story and it is quite an amazing one. I've seen her perform a couple of times but had absolutely no idea how she got there. It's also a great New York story which I am a sucker for especially this era with this cast of characters. Her tales of living at The Chelsea Hotel alone are worth the read. "The Chelsea was like a doll's house in the Twilight Zone, with a hundred rooms, each a small universe." She lived there with her soul mate Robert Mapplethorpe. This book is Patti's labor of love to tell their story. Supporting cast includes Hendrix, Joplin, Jim Morrison (PS figured she could do it if he could), Harry Smith, Warhol, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Corso, Grace Slick, Dylan, etc.
