Translated from the popular Italian series, this book had a fascinating blend of the usual (wise, incorruptible inspector in the midst of an extremely corrupt city takes on complicated case, finds further corruption) and the unusual. There's a fair, almost admirable vulgarity to the detective's speech and even sometimes his actions that defies the usual heroic stereotype. The book uses graphic language in place of graphic violence, perhaps to show that both are everyday occurrences in Siciliy. The mystery is solved and some justice is served, again as much by the author as by the Inspector, who decides to play God at the end.
