American or English pig-iron magnate, male, in
South Africa, beset by internal qualms & external problems
with women, his son, his native employees, the Indian
shopkeeper, his Boer neighbors, bad weather. He'd like to
live without all that on his country-escape farm where he
could just sit quietly and smell the flowers. No such
luck! But you can sympathize with him, without liking him.
I probably won't tackle another long book by Gordimer.
