This was one of my favorite books as a little girl and I read it several times. I've been saving it to share with my kids and just picked it up again over the weekend to see if my 7-year-old is ready for it. I haven't decided yet, as some of the vocabulary may be a little too advanced. Still, I think she'd do well if we read it together.

It is about an orphan girl who climbs over the wall of the orphanage grounds and discovers an abandoned cottage which she makes her own by cleaning it and working in the garden. Keeping this special place a secret becomes more complicated for Mandy even as her yearning for a true home intensifies.
