Washinton Square is a study in deception. At least from my perspective it is. I would certainly say that each of the characters in this book are deceiving themselves. They hold themselves to these deceptions and act upon them. Henry James gives a clear description of each of the people in this book. He gives the reader a sense of the internal life of each of his characters and how their behaviour reflects their internal life. Their actions are not in harmony with what they are thinking. This is the most clear deception of all. I found it very interesting.
