I was drawn to continue to read this book until the very end. A fourteen year old girl begins figuring out who she is and what she should be doing in very tense times. This book just hit the right spot for me. p.289, "And when you get down to it, Lily, that is the only purpose grand enough for a human life. Not just to love but to persist in love."
I am interested in the depiction of the south in literature as a way of making sense of my life and my family. This book showed good and bad in a realistic mix. It was not a polemic but a tale worth hearing.
