This was my 9 yr old son's recent class read so I thought it would be a good idea to read it myself and be in a position to discuss it with him, if he wished!

I was impressed that he was able to cope with such a challenging read at his age but I have yet to be disappointed by a Morpurgo book, such is his expert storytelling and ability to capture the innocence and vulnerability of our animal friends whilst highlighting both the good and bad sides of human nature. I also learned quite a lot about narwhals and the Scilly Isles without feeling like I was back in the classroom. This seemingly simple story also examines the timeless themes of friendship and trust. A great read for all ages.
