The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (American Publishing Company 1876)(Fiction - Children's) - Along with the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, these are the two best known and loved books by (arguably) America's best-loved author. Tom Sawyer is a thinly disguised stand-in for the author as a boy. This book tells the tale of his youth on the banks of the Mississippi River. Everyone knows these tales: the whitewashed fence, lost int eh cave, hiding from Injun Joe. It's obvious why Twain held America in thrall at the turn of the 19th century. My rating: 8/10, finished 1970.
