Capricorn Anderson lives with his hippie grandmother, rarely encounters any civilization outside their commune, Garland, and is home schooled. When his grandmother, Rain, falls and breaks her hip, Cap must stay with a social worker, Flora Donnelly (and her typically teenage, self-absorbed daughter, Sophie) until Rain recuperates and is able to return to the farm.

Cap is thrown into middle school dynamics and mayhem, when he attends Claverge Middle School and encounters bullies Zach,Darryl,Naomi, and Lena, who attempt to make his life unbearable. Hugh Winkleman, previously held the title of class nerd and loser before Cap came along. Therefore, Hugh attempts to befriend him knowing how the bullies will torment him. Surprisingly though, Cap rises above each situation and slowly and surely endears himself to the student body. Everything turns topsy-turvy when the student body begins to idolize and view Cap with a superstar status. Zach is furious, Hugh is befuddled, and Mrs. Donnelly is clueless to everything. While trying to retain his peace-loving mind-set, yet attempting to assimilate into the 21st century, Cap finds he must bridge the good with the bad in each scenario.

When Rain has recovered and she can finally return to Garland with Cap, she discovers that she might have done some disservice to Cap, sheltering him from the big-bad, money-grubbing, evil world...after all, someday he will have to navigate his way around without her.

Cap is the male version protagonist to Jerry Spinelli's Stargirl. Accepting one with all of his or her idiosyncrasies and quirkiness is part of growing up and adapting to the real world. Cap is true to himself and his ideals, no matter how far-fetched they seem to others. Schooled has all of Gordon Korman's humor and realism we've come to expect...a fast-paced book of delight.
