it was amazing
Read in December, 2007

This is my pick of late great 2007, which is timely because Sarah Polley's new film Away From Her is actually based on "The Bear Came Over the Mountain"--the last story in this volume...

These stories are rich and imaginative accounts of private selves elevating moments of the isolated, individual mind ranging from the workaday to the [actually frequently] moribund. In writing what she knows, Munro's characters are typically writers, members of academia in some form, or at least obviously educated, which may put some readers off: however, she never strays from what is universal--communicating with precision and tenderness familiar childhood memories and our alternating desires for communion and isolation. To accomplish this end, she has merely chosen minds to play in with some gift at articulating their own feelings.

Honestly, these stories are perfect. I read through hoping, as I do, for my interest to flag naturally so as to whittle the text down to a more easily digestible collection of my personal favorites, but in the end found only an overwhelming appreciation for her craft. As high a praise as I can deliver: she effectively mediates the distance between Flannery O'Connor and Virginia Woolf.

Amy Maxwell I know this site is about books...but since you mentioned Away from Her--IT is an AWESOME film--heartbreaking to the core, but full of real emotion and beautifully acted. A MUST SEE!!! Julie Christie and Sigourney Weaver are amazing in this film.

Erik I still haven't seen this yet. But I shall. Seriously though Amy, check this book of short stories out. That story is in particular is really incredible.
