The blurb on the front of my book calls Hunger "one of the most disturbing novels in existence." I couldn't agree more. The unnamed narrator walks around the city, very poor and starving, yet not wanting to elicit pity from those around him. Maybe his pride did keep him from having many warm meals or dry lodging, but I suppose not many people would feel very comfortable having other people look down on them. When you don't have anything, perhaps pride is the one thing you can have in spades. Well, I will definitely not be taking for granted the meals in my stomach, the clothes on my back, or the bed I snuggle into at night.
