A really terrible novel from Dostoevsky. Overwritten, atrociously dull protagonist, endlessly indulgent prose. His lowest moment.

Svetlana To make such a statement you must be some kind of "genius',are you??????????? Have you done anything in you life that deserves any kind of prise or at least praise for something? And even if you did do you believe that your creation deserves something better than to collect a dust ia a shelf "to be used as a toilet paper"

MJ Nicholls Erm. Well. Don't take this review personally: I just found this to be Dostoevsky's worst novel. The "toilet-paper" shelf is harsh, sure, but meant ironically. I really love Dostoevsky. He's one of my favourite novelists, so please refer to one of my glowing reviews instead. Thank you.

Svetlana Well! That's much better.Thank you for clarifying that.Sorry for snapping at you like that,it's just Dostoevski happened to be my favorite writer and you happened to trash him like that. That was just above me!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to reply.I hope no hard feelings.

MJ Nicholls Not at all. Have you read The Adolescent? What are your thoughts? I found it to be his worst novel, but he followed it up with Brothers Karamazov, so all was well in the end.

Svetlana Actually,I'm in the middle of it right now.Maybe it's not that deep, like Brothers K.,but still It's not that " atrociously dull".It's simply about a boy who really needed a father and his personal psychological tragedy.I like how Dostoevsky describe people's nature. For me it's not about the story but about inner life of a person.Well, may be for you it just was not a good translated edition...

MJ Nicholls Well, maybe I need to give it another read! I read the Pevear/Volokhonsky version, so... excellent translation. I had left my Dostoevsky "phase" at that time, so maybe I wasn't picking up some of the nuance in his earlier works!

Svetlana Good luck with that, while you're skinning your llamas.By the way, don't you feel sorry for them?!
