Van Draanen, Wendelin. Flipped. 212 p. A. A. Knopf. 2001. ISBN 978-0-375-81174-6 .

When Bryce Loski moves in across the street from Julie Baker in 2nd grade, she immediately falls in love with him! When Bryce meets her for the first time, he runs.

Her infatuation with him finally starts to wane in 8th grade as she finally sees how shallow he is. At the same time, Bryce begins to see how great Julie is and now he can’t stop thinking about her. The roles have been flipped.

This great story is told in alternating chapters by Julie & Bryce. The story is told from their perspectives as 8th graders and they are recounting their lives from 2nd grade to the present.
As characters, Bryce and Julie are easy to relate to and extremely likable. Julie is not afraid to speak her mind. There are many relationship issues in this book that middle school aged kids will be able to relate to. I really loved the ending of this book, which is saying a lot, because I’m very picky about endings.

I have a friend whose daughter is now in college. She said this book was her favorite book she read in middle school, and still is one of her favorite books. That says a lot!

This book rocks!
