Merit never had fantasies of being a vampire but when she's attacked, the choice is taken out of her hands by Ethan Sullivan, Master of Cadogan House. She is not appreciative. But since this is her new life, she decides to embrace it as best she can. She has allies. It turns out her grandfather, a retired police detective, isn't so retired. He runs the Ombud office, the clearinghouse for supernatural issues. Considering the public only knows about vampires this comes as a big surprise to Merit. An even bigger surprise is that she's powerful. For a baby vamp she can resist the call of her Master easily. Since she isn't enamored of the whole vamp thing, she immediately begins making etiquette mistakes, practically causing an international incident between vampire houses. She and Ethan spark between them but she doesn't want to want him. Which makes for some amusing tension. Merit is a terrific main character. She's tough with a marshmallow interior. Her roommate can handle anything that life throws at her or Merit, including the fact that she turns out to be a sorcerer. There are some things that feel derivative of other authors but on the whole, the world stands on its own. I wasn't sure I'd want to continue the series but I've already put book 2 on hold.
