I taught this book as part of a summer SAT Writing class. Sadly, the students didn't "get" the humor of it. I explained to them that anytime something really weird or absurd happened in the book, that it was funny, and it was okay for them to laugh at it. I think I got more out of it than they did, unfortunately; I didn't try to examine every scene, I just tried to go with the flow.
