I loved this book so much, but it kind of made me sad that I don't have a secret garden on my estate. Oh wait, I don't have an estate . . . While reading about Mary, I wanted to be her--I wanted to have an appetite for a hearty breakfast, then bundle up (with a skipping rope) and go outside to explore and play--to be completely free from everything but my own imagination. I loved reading about the flowers in the garden coming to life. And I loved Dickon and his family, and the mysterious draw of the garden for Colin. I truly believe that every child needs his or her own "secret garden"--a world apart from adults. Mary and the other children had a secret world that was beautiful, and more than just the roses came back to life. I can't wait to read this book someday to both of my kids. (And if I can't have a secret garden on my estate, I could at least grow a few things along a wall like Dickon did, couldn't I?)
