Pretty good, this. The blurb on the cover hints that it aspires to the greatness achieved by Dune and Foundation. I'll contest that, but nonetheless this is a good science fiction novel. It's actually the first in a duology called Succession, the sequel being The Killing of Worlds.

Although I didn't care much for some of the symbolism and political humdrum, I would recommend this to people looking for a Space Opera flavoured with combat sequences. Or is it the other way around? Military Sci-Fi spiced with Opera? Some of the tactics and gadgets described here are certainly fascinating. A great deal of thought has obviously gone into the military aspect of this series.

The risen empire of the title refers to a human empire ruled by an undead emperor (Lich?). That, in itself, is somewhat of a deviation from the usual, no?

Check it out.
