Dr. Gawande searches for ways to improve surgery, and gets inspiration from the checklists pilots use to safely fly airplanes. He describes how using a simple checklist can help surgical staff work together as a team and includes evidence from personal experience as well as scientific studies that show how checklists can reduce complications and save lives.
