it was amazing

Heartwrenching and beautiful and honest. I usually hate Vietnam stories because they are so bleak and horrible and inhumane, and this book is that in sections, but kind of shows you how you could get to that place too and somehow recover. Or never recover totally but still be humane. The story about his decision not to dodge the draft is the most dead-on portrait of an American I've read. I sobbed the whole way through the description of the people on the shore of the river, on a bullshit Virgin America flight.

If you get upset about Henry Ford or MacDonald's or anti-depressants or other American anonymity factories, this is a certain brand of "hello, it's okay."

You will also probably think about Walter from the Big Lebowski.
