I read this book in two days. All of the stories are written by women serving time in the York Correctional Institution in Connecticut. Most of the stories center around their childhood experiences before going to prison. The trends become very clear very quickly; almost all of these women suffered from physical and/or sexual abuse as children and teens. Wally Lamb, who teaches a writing class at the prison, has helped these women develop their voice and tell their stories, which may never have gotten out to the public otherwise. And if anyone has any interest in stopping the cycle of violence against women (or anyone else for that matter), these are the stories that need to be heard.
