This book is much more than the line you get about it in the AP History texts (showed off horrible working and sanitary conditions in the meat packing industry; led to reforms). It's really akin to (and obviously preceded) Out of This Furnace as being a chronicle of the horrors of the immigrant experience--the poverty, scams, social inequity, illness, and general wretchedness of life in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Reading something like this makes you incredibly appreciative of the things so many of our ancestors endured to make it to and in America.
