Jordan Sonnenblick succeeds in taking a sad and frightening subject and writing about it in a humorous way that is very accessible to middle schoolers. Thirteen-year-old Steven, who loves to play drums in the jazz band and is becoming more and more interested in girls, has his world turned upside-down when his younger brother Jeffrey is diagnosed with leukemia. The first person narration sounds authentically like a teenager, and manages to be both funny and touching. It reads quickly, but leaves a strong impression. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel (After Ever After ).
