This was a great book. I laughed out loud many times. I love her descriptions and narratives.
The story is about Novalee, a young unwed mother, who gets dumped at a WalMart and then proceeds to live there until she gives birth and is discovered. Billie Letts got the idea for this book while visiting a Wal Mart and as she looked around she thought - you could actually live here.
When she was telling about the boyfriend's plan to lose a finger so he could collect a disability, and which finger he planned to lose it was fascinating. (i.e. the middle finger was used for communication).
Then there was Sister Husband and her relationship with her lover - praying over the table that they had fornicated on that very afternoon.
It's a great story of triumph over great odds.
This was made into a movie with Natalie Portman, Stockard Channing and Ashley Judd. I couldn't figure out who Ashley was supposed to be when I first heard. But remembering the friend - she was great.
