I love the character of Mary Russell and I enjoy King's presentation of Sherlock Holmes. Not being a Holmes expert, I am more open to enjoying the characterization presented in these books. I picked this third book up after an overabundance of fantasy reading and it felt like I was in the company of old friends.

I have to admit, I felt the case was a little weak. I hoped there would be more about the papyrus from Mary Magdalene, but it played a peripheral role. In spite of the weaknesses in the plot, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I read for characters and all their thoughts and feelings. Whatever weakness King shows in plot or mystery, she truly makes up for in her characters.
