really liked it
bookshelves: fiction, classics
Read from October 26 to December 28, 2010

George Eliot and Virginia Wolf believed this was Bronte's best work, so I can't help but compare Vilette with Jane Eyre. I loved Jane Eyre and think it's story and main character are much more likeable and readable. Villete, however, has many parts (most of the first half) that drag with many overdone descriptions. Lucy Snow, the main character, is not as likeable, and leaves out a lot of information that you feel you need as a reader. Slowly, the pieces to this story all come together to create a masterpiece that is better written and more developed than Jane Eyre. Lucy Snow begins with no family, money, or hope and slowly finds herself, independence, and love. I love, love the ending. This book is suppose to be semi-autobiographical, so it leaves me wanting to read more about Charlotte Bronte...who just joined my list of favorite authors.
