I liked this book well enough, but it wasn't the right choice of reading material for someone in my condition. It probably would have been nice to know that there would be a pregnant woman in the book, and that that pregnant woman would have a horribly tough labor, and that labor would end up sounding horrible and awful enough for me to wonder how the hell I'm going to get this baby out of my uterus when the time comes (since I also think C-sections sound horrible and awful), and that then the new mother would have a rough time with new motherhood, so that I am sufficiently freaked out.

BLARGH.

Still, I like Sue Miller. Her books tend to be very entertaining, although I did find myself wondering when the other shoe was going to drop since it always seems to do so in her novels.

Mark Lara, if you haven't seen it, rent the film, "The Business of Being Born". It's documentary, produced by Rikki Lake, about midwives and having your baby at home. It will show you there is a natural alternative to hospital births. I hope your fears are alleviated.
