Dark and masterful. I listened to an Audible Audiobook, narrated by the excellent Frank Muller (late). Listening to it, I marveled how aurally apt the writing was, almost as if Koestler had written this book to be read.

Interestingly, the original Hungarian manuscript of this novel was lost in the chaos of war but its English translation survived. We will never know if the genius is Koestler's alone or whether the translator deserves credit. But I do know that the narrator, Frank Muller, deserves my thanks for this lucid and atmospheric read.
