Doctorow is very much in control of his almost-but-not-quite stream of consciousness style of writing here as well his typical blend of historical figures w/ fictional characters. I loved this book both for the snapshot of one piece of American history, but also I loved it for his beautiful language. You could open it to any page and just enjoy his writing, as if each passage were a stand alone poem.
