To clarify, at this point the amount of material in the book that actually originated in the claims of the Lutz family is drastically reduced; the book is largely a work of complete fiction.

As to its quality, the book is inconsistent. The beginning of the book, ironically, is the most exciting. Once the Lutz family moves to California, however, things slow down and practically stop. Nothing in this book is nearly as interesting or disturbing as the events from the original. The climax, too, is largely underwhelming.

Perhaps most notable is the fact that John G. Jones simply cannot write an effective horror scene. There are things here that are creepy in concept, but the delivery always falls flat.
