did not like it
bookshelves: abandoned, romancelandia
Recommended for: fans of Jeanine Frost's "Night Huntress" series
Read from September 15 to 16, 2010

My apologies to all my friends who love this book, but again, I fail to understand the appeal. Like with a few other popular novels I've tried reading recently, this is simply a glorified fanfiction in print. If you ever ask me what I mean calling books "fanfiction," my answer would be, as with the definition of "porn," I can't articulate it, but I know when I see/read it. It's just too gratuitous and lacks substance, depth, flavor, richness, even though it, at times, entertains.

Annalisa Yeah for one star! The only reason I gave this 2 stars is because I kind of liked the beginning, and then I was embarrassed to have liked it and mortified to have read it when I realized what the book was really about.

Tatiana It takes no time to find out who will rip whose bodice/corset in this one, does it not?

And I've noticed, you, generally, a much more tolerant and forgiving reader:)

Annalisa No, it does not. The naked scene was most laughable. No need to be ripping much of anything there.

I try to be. I write, so I take sympathy on authors for how hard it is to write, although sometimes it makes me more critical too. I tend to round up my stars and then come back later when all that tolerance is gone and put them back down :).

Tatiana LOL.

What do you write? For some reason I am sure it's not paranormal bodice-rippers.

Tatiana Oh, and I didn't get to the naked scene, at least I don't think I did. I did, however, flip to the carriage "thing." It sounded very uncomfortable if you ask me:)

message 6: by Megan (new) - added it

Megan This one didn't do it for me either. I couldn't even get past the first few chapters :(

Tatiana Chapter and a half for me.

message 8: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH Oh no! You didn't like it. Oh well. I think my reviews may be biased by the books that I read that week. If one book stinks, the other becomes so much better.

I did enjoy this book. I found it fun. There, I've admitted it. Shall I duck and cover now?

Tatiana Oh no, AH. I do understand why you would like it. Different things please us, that's all. Glad you enjoyed it. That's what we read for - pleasure, right?

message 10: by Desperado (last edited Sep 16, 2010 07:14PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Desperado Ouch! I haven't read this book yet so I don't have an opinion yet. But chica, you can sure write a "kiss my ass" review. Bravo!

ETA: I made a boo boo!

Tatiana Thanks?;)

Don't let my review turn you off reading it though. It is super popular. I am just sometimes very hard to please.

Annalisa YA. No bodices or contrived sex :). In fact, I don't really like romance so I prefer guy MCs.

Spoiler here: the nude scene is when she get captured and thrown into a room with her werewolf lover and since it's the full moon he's naked and they are full on getting it on (her clothes are still on though, barely). She says some ridiculous things. But the carriage scene, yeah ouch. And a girl wrote this. She has to know how much that's going to hurt, especially for a virgin.

Kat Kennedy Okay I'm officially taking this off my TBR list! Great review!

Annalisa - I'm an author too but I'm not compassionate like you. I think it makes me a lot more critical.

message 14: by Annalisa (last edited Sep 16, 2010 04:31PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Annalisa Kat,
It does both for me. While reading, I pick a book apart (down to the sentence structure) and am pointing out all the things that aren't working. But then I'm picking out the things that are working too. My reviews tend to hit in the middle because while there is always something wrong, there's usually something right too. And a book can be awful at some things but so good at something else that it'll still rate high for me (like Twilight).

In this case, the writing isn't that bad. Carriger can actually be funny, but then she loses it with contrived plot points. That, and it's a romance, which I just think are awkward. While I didn't like it, I have to admit that for a romance, it wasn't as awful as I expected it to be. So I gave her a little credit for that.

Tatiana Annalisa, I don't know about you, but while I thought she was funny, the constant funniness started to give me a headache very quickly.

Annalisa Yeah. It was funny the first chapter or so and then it got old. But she quit it anyway to get to the romance.

Tatiana Ah, Ok. I didn't read it that far then.

Tatiana And Kat, don't rush to remove it from your TBR. You seem to have similar taste in PNR/UF with AH and not with me. Maybe you will enjoy it?

message 19: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH Kat, don't remove it from your list yet. It is an entertaining book and sometimes you just need to read something light and fun!

Desperado Tatiana wrote: "Thanks?;)

Sorry, I meant to write "kiss" not "kick". I'll go an edit it after this post. Your review did not turn me off, I'm just stating that I think it is wonderful & brave of you to go against popular opinion & speak your mind. I too am very hard to please & when I'm not, I let it be known. I can respect that in other people, even if my opinions don't match their own.

Kat!!! You have to at least try a bit of it! Tatiana's being very picky and grumpy. Plus she's ever so wrong.

However, that being said, a lot of us have not liked the next two books. So I would just read book one as a stand-alone.

Tatiana Yeah, April, I am like that:)

Chris Interesting. I always hear rave reviews of this series. It was okay, but I don't see myself picking up the books. Something was just lacking for me.

Elsa.np Tatiana, I think you need to read all of it.

I almost droped it at the beggining thinking i have other books to read, but ince i hate not finishing a book a gave it a try and found out i couldn't stop reading!!

I confess the first chapters are not fascinating but it gets so much better!!!

In short, give it another try, and if really you still can't enjoy it then you'll know it's really not for you. But quitting a book like that, with so much to put in place in the first chapters, after two chapters is too bad.
Would be like stop a movie before the end of the exposure stage.

Tatiana No, thank you. I've read enough of it to know it's not my kind of book.

And I do the same with movies too.

message 26: by Lynette (new)

Lynette I use the term "glorified fanfic" as well, and also cannot quite define it. I couldn't get past the first chapter of this book. NEXT!

message 27: by Arslan (new)

Arslan Thank you ladies. Not going to read it.

Georgia Gladitz Not to mention the blatant, uncomfortable racism...
