it was ok

I had a somewhat hard time figuring out how to rate this book, and opted for one and a half stars.

The story is very, very real—much more so than I would expect from a picture book, actually—and the warmth of the relationship between Tom and Tommy carries the narrative very well. One can tell that Tomie dePaola holds back nothing (or at most, very little) in letting the reader know about the unusual inside jokes between him and his grandpa, and while this might be slightly unsettling for some people, it does give an uncompromising look at a great, memorable relationship between a grandpa and grandson. That is where this book really shines for all its worth.
