First, a little bit about me: There are three things in particular that instill fear into many members of modern-day society and I embrace with pleasure. They are as follows:
1. Books (will make you BORING!)
2. Food (will make you FAT!)
3. Particularity (will make you UNBEARABLE!)
I cannot find it in myself to relate, and to some extent I've learned to deal with that. (Anyone who knows me well enough, has read the book, and happens upon this “review” will probably think, “Of course she centered in on the essay about food. At least she knows how unbearable she can be.”)
Fadiman’s Ex Libris is a relief in a world full of constant dieters who only read the occasional bestseller and would rather lazily, yet proudly, discuss their last salad instead of their latest read. Fadiman appreciates a good meal, a good book, and a perfect word enough to document each one. She does so with wit, love, and eloquence. The result is a lovely ode to the subtle pleasures and char...more

I've been used book store hopping these past few days, which may not be very smart because I have to take a plane home with maybe 15 books! This was in one of the stores, and of course I had to grab it!
Where are you?
When my son goes to his Dad's, he take a ton of books. We pack some, and mail the rest. If you can live without them, there is bookrate.
We feel it is necassary because his Dad is on 500 acre in the middle of the Ozarks. The cross roads up the raod a piece has 79 people.
Some lovly soul did try to start a library in an old house. Only open on Sat.and thick dust everywhere.
Enjou your trip. You can always leave your toothbrust behind to make room. LOL ;) Jo
I made it back with all books + toothbrush! I was in North Carolina for a few days.Did the library work out? While I was in one of the used bookstores I thought about how lovely the thought of opening a used bookstore is.
Sort of for a while but I think it is gone now. I know what you mean about a bookstore. My to favorite here are mom and pop places. Of course we have all the big ones, but it is nice to walk though the door and know the clerk's name and that she really reads, and I am floored they remember my name. Vary small town feel. :), Jo
