Amber's review
The Sandman Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones by Neil Gaiman (Goodreads author!)
Oh man, this was a disappointment. After reading the last page I wanted to throw it across the room. Horrible.
Basically, Neil Gaimen decided to drag every major plotline from the entire series into the final episode. It didn't really matter whether it made sense to do so; what was perhaps supposed to lend closure to all the stories (most of which seemed pretty well concluded already, honestly) only ended up confusing me; it really only works if you've read the entire series back-to-back in a frame of about two months or so, which I hadn't. These superfluous plotlines had about the same effect on the storyline as a snag in a piece of fabric...lots of little threads leading nowhere at all.
Add a quart of angst, pretention, and gratuitous tragedy. I don't care how good you are; you don't kill off G.K. Chesterton and let ravens eat his eyeballs. It simply isn't done.
In all, I would call this installment a nearly good idea which Gaimen continuously thwarts. The Furies ...more
