This book hooked me straight away. I borrowed it from a mate and I was expecting something like Twilight...slow paced and all about a crush. Well, it was definitely NOT slow paced, and while a crush came into it there was so much more packed in there as well.
O.K, so this is the first book and the characters aren't as well developed as in the next books and fall a little flat. It's a fairly typical book...from feisty hero Zoey to nerds=good and popular=evil. But the idea of a school for "vampyres" and their religion and the fact that becoming a vampyre is a biological change, keep the book interesting.
Stereotypes: used to develop characters quickly. There is a lot of them, including the gay best friend (Damien) the clothes obsessed girls (Shaunee and Erin) and the Queen of Mean (Aphrodite). Still, they're all written with enough wit to be entertaining.
Nothing extra special about the first book apart from the ideas: the series gets better as it goes on. Zoey and pals are likable enough.
