JLA Vol. 7: Tower of Babel by Mark Waid
Mark Waid's first and probably best "JLA" arc. Though a writer of considerable talent (and paired here with a host of decent artists), he attempts to follow his predecessor, Grant Morrison, with one of Morrison's typical "big idea" stories and doesn't quite hit the mark (naturally, Waid's best when writing in his own voice, typically more intimate than Morrison's). This story ends with the major misstep of ousting a vital character from the team's roster, a move from which Waid's JLA never really recovers (Waid eventually ends his run with the Justice League fighting... Santa Claus). This volume also reprints a short story by the eternally underrated Christopher J. Priest (art by Eric Battle) which kicked off the short-lived "Aquaman hearts Wonder Woman" subplot. Aside from Waid's ending, the ramifications of which were brief anyway, "Tower of Babel" is serviceable, high-stakes superheroics.
