I wasn't as impressed with this book by Card (with Johnston) as some of his others (Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow); however, having said that, there were some elements that were satisfying. I could imagine a scientist who thinks of himself as "perfect" and would like to make clones of himself. It certainly could be a cautionary tale for those who mess around with DNA and human cloning.
