Gerald is an okay character, though rather frustrating because he could be really stupid. And naive. The princess is exceedingly annoying because all she knows how to do is yell and argue and be all together disagreeable. When she wasn't being annoying she was crying. I could understand both feelings, she was in a very horrible situation, but after a couple hundred pages I could only take so much. The talking bird was irritating. Just irritating. I don't know why Gerald kept her around. The best character was Monk and he wasn't in it nearly enough and then he makes a bad choice in the romance department.

The good of the book was the overall plot. The writing was fun and very readable. The bad guy was really bad, which was disturbing, but awesome.
