A series of surreal and supernatural stories by a very bleak Russian author. They are less intersting than they sound, but a few were vivid and will stay with me, especially the horror of the story "Hygiene". Most were forgettable because they have no characters to speak of. Rather the characters are not individuated, they are just their roles (mother, father, daughter, son) and maybe that says something about the nature of Soviet and post Soviet Russia. Most are about abandonment, death and the way-station betwen life and afterlife. A few give hope for an improved earthly life, but only after supernatural intervention.
