This book wasn't easy to read, a little like Don DeLillo's Underworld, maybe a little bit less bizarre, but similar fragmentation and confusion. Wanting's interesting historical-fictional premise is a mixture of what might have happened between Charles Dickens and young actress Ellen Ternan, and what might have happened between an aboriginal little Tanzanian girl named Mathinna and Lady Jane and Sir John Franklin of London.

Each character is longing for something or someone: there are several lost daughters, fame and fortune, social elevation, ancestral connections, and of course love. I'll look for more of Flanagan's to read in future.
