Jessica moves to Bixby Oklahoma b/c her mom has a new job. It is in this small town that Jessica realizes that that there is something special about her, for one hour a night she is one of five teens who are able to move around the midnight hour. They were all born at midnight and have powers. Not very "super" hero powers, a polymath, I suppose being extraordinary at math is special. Jessica is unsure what her power is but whatever it is makes the darklings, who have been scaring humans since early civilization to get real nervous. So nervous they want her dead. It will take all four of the midnighters to fight of the darklings and figure out what Jessica's midnight power is.
I like all of Westerfeld's book. I like his voice and his style. If I had read this before Peeps or the Uglies series, I might have liked it more, but after those extreme world's he creates this one feels mild.
