I loved this book! After reading it, I spent time debating whether I liked it better than the adorable Love That Dog and I think I did.

In this book, Jack is back and in the next grade level, but with the same great teacher as before. He questions his ability to write poetry (spurred by negative comments from his professor uncle) while writing the book all in poems. Jack's voice is a great example of a gifted and bright elementary kid. I found myself laughing and gasping with Jack as he told his story. As the parent of several rescued kitties, the plotline about how he comes to love cats warmed my heart. But, the poems about him trying to understand his mother's deafness are brilliant. It takes a fun read and makes it a great book.

The back of the book has all of the poems that the teacher uses in the classroom and that Jack either mentions or uses as a model. If read closely, an entire poetry unit and writing workshop are already developed for the savvy teacher.
