After 1875 pages of "A Song of Ice and Fire" I am still as interested as ever. There are very few books and even less series that can hold my attention for that long. However, GRRM has been able to keep the story fresh and exciting despite the fact that long-loved characters die on a whim, and others come forward to take their place. Reading the first two books reminds me of a dream I had when I was a kid. I wanted more than anything in the world the Gi-Joe aircraft carrier. I would have murdered for that thing. I would look at its picture constantly, and dream of it frequently. However, often my dreams of it would end in its destruction and/or theft. I have no idea why this theme was reoccurring, but in any case I remember the feeling of lose after every such dream. The first two books so far have brought this feeling back in the way that it treats its characters. For hundreds of pages GRRM spends vast effort making you love them, and then in the blink of an eye......more
