I came back to Anita Shreve after not reading her for a while. This book reminded me why I lost interest in her stuff. While I felt in touch with her earlier novels, this one left me wondering what was the poiint. The characters to me were flat and somewhat lost. Like other Shreve novels, the direction of the characters was unclear as they floundered to understand their new life. There were few real emotions and the mountain scenes, while getting the idea that they wre harrowing, did not elicit an understanding of the challenges out there. The ending left me feeling like she just got tired of writing this, which was OK because I was getting a little tired of reading it. This is not one I would recommend.
