The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl by Barry Lyga
Our book club read The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl and even though every kid was from a completely different walk of life, they all related to this book. They said things like: I wish I knew Kyra and that she was my friend. They said that they understood what Fanboy was going through.
It is a story about bullies, about misfits, about finding a path, about losing a friend…or two. It is finding a way to fit in – at school, in your new family, in your friendships.
The voice is fresh and funny and easily communicated to teens. You have empathy for the character because he is so well written – even if he isn’t like you.
Barry Lyga did a fantastic job writing a book that manga readers will like, as well as your fiction readers; that is a hard task to master.
