The perfect post-apocalyptic dystopian novel for today's youth. In the ruins of America there is a greedy all consuming vacuous capitol. The capitol manipulates the 12 remaining districts into submission by a cruel and elaborate annual process called "The Hunger Games". From the age of 12 till 18 each child goes into a ballot. Each year one boy and girl from each district is pulled from the ballot if their name is selected they have no choice but to participate in a televised fight to death the last remaining is spared. The games generate entertainment and revenue for the capitol through sponsorship and betting on favoured participants. A novel concept yet it seems the next obvious step from the endless reality based TV we now currently subjected to.

It is fast paced and easy to read with lots of hooks. You are quickly connected to Katniss the main character from district 12 and her signifigant others (including her fellow participant). I was drawn into her world and felt the complexity of her situation. The ongoing challenges of survial make it compelling to keep going right to the abrupt end. Not surprisingly I was left wanting more as I do not have it on hand I am forced re think the plot etc and wait to obtain a copy of the sequel - Catching Fire.

I hope I can convince both of my hopeless non reading Sons to pick this up and persevere with it I feel it may resonate with them and help in my fruitless quest of turning them on to reading....

Mary Kate, good review. If the sons go on line a lot, there is a lot of internet chat about the new Hunger Games movie - casting, etc. is shown on Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com). That may create an interest in reading the book.

Kate Excellent - I knew a movie couldn't be far away as it is so well paced the perfect size, and all costuming design etc is already done. The interesting thing will be the interpretation.

Good tip in creating reading interest - thanks.
