Another one of my favorite books in high school . . . I actually read it on a church mission trip, which even at the time I found hugely ironic. I remember thinking even then that all of the stuff about not helping others was overdone tosh, and skimming a number of the speeches; but I found Rand's conception of individual identity compelling and inspiring: that one should strive for self-sufficiency, and wholeness, and originality in all one's work and art. So I'm grateful to her for making me think about those things, even as I'm slightly appalled at my high school fondness, given all I've learned about her since.
