His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass) by Philip Pullman
though i found the first half of the story interesting, for me, the work as a total devolved into predictable divisions, and the ingenuity of the books' worlds fell into pedestrian patterns; ultimately i had to force myself to finish it.
