This is the second of six books in the Earth Children's series. This book focuses on Ayla as she deals with the loss of her family, and her efforts to survive the periglacial steppes, without human help or contact. The other half of the book (intertwined) is of Jondalar and his long journey traveling along the "Great Mother River", where he meets a variety of peoples, and finally fate puts him Ayla's path.

Book two is slightly redundant, as Jean Auel reiterates many of the things that happened in the first book as reminders (which by the 20th time you've read the book, you probably no longer need. I still actively enjoy it each time I read it.
